Our Story

History

The F.L. Rounds Coal Company Building was built in 1908 and served as coal weighing station until 2002. Now known as the Vestal Coal House, the historic building has been transformed from a coal station into a café and community event hub. This unique building, designed by C.A. Olmstead, had an arch through which trucks passed to be weighed empty and reweighed after loading with coal at the large tipple near the train station. The building was moved to a position straddling the Rail Trail in 2006. The Vestal Coal House Café & events got its start in 2012.The Coal House Café offers a wide array of food and drinks, including healthy smoothies, milkshakes, ice cream, bubble tea, coffee, tea, sandwiches, wraps, and more. Our specialty is real fruit and vegetable smoothies and drinks! The Coal House also hosts numerous 5k and 10k events each year on the Vestal Rail Trail, each with a fun theme and charity. Other fitness events include Free Monday Workouts in the spring and summer, Kids On Track program for the youth, FIT Kids for the Youth, Seniors Training Program and Run/Walk Festival, and the Girls Run Our World Running Program. We also organize fun community events, such as Tuesday trivia nights on the patio, Thursday open mic music nights, comedy shows, holiday events such as the Haunted Rail Trail and Christmas at the Coal House, live music, and more. Come check out all the fantastic food & fun at the Vestal Coal House.
